Elixir for the brain

Recent studies have shown that drinking Green Tea regularly helps to ward off some typical diseases occurring in old age such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease.

Some studies have been carried out involving over one thousand Japanese people aged about 70.
In Tea leaves there are some compounds that can protect brain cells from some degenerative diseases which affect parts of the brain. These results can explain why senile dementia rates are very low in these countries.

Regular Tea consumption can improve memory.
A group of researchers from New Castle Upon Tyne University (U.K) has found out that Tea inhibits the production of certain types of enzymes in the brain that are associated to memory.

A very important polyphenol is tannic acid. This acid cancels the effect of caffeine in Tea, which – unlike caffeine contained in coffee - has a longer sustained effect and does not affect the heart. Therefore, we can state that Tea improves mental faculties, but it is not a stimulant.

In fact caffeine affects neurotransmitters of the brain, thus promoting quiet mood but also attention. This state of mind is ideal during meditation or for concentration, because it enables us to keep high levels of attention without causing any physical problems.
Moreover, the caffeine that is contained in Green Tea does not upset the stomach, because it is easily absorbed by the intestines instead, unlike caffeine contained in coffee and Black Tea that are both absorbed directly by the stomach.

EGCG is a potent antioxidant and protects the lipids in the brain that are particularly sensitive to oxidative stress; this protection is about 20 times higher than that preformed by vitamin E (Chem. Pharm. Bullettin 38-1990).
