"Hericium erinaceus: an edible mushroom with medicinal values"

"Hericium erinaceus, also known as lion's mane mushroom or hedgehog mushroom, is an edible mushroom, which has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. This fungus is rich in some physiologically important components, in particular the β-glucan polysaccharides, responsible for the antitumor, immunomodulating, lipid-lowering activities, antioxidants and neuroprotective activities of this fungus. H. erinaceus has also been reported to have antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antidiabetic and healing properties among other therapeutic potentials. This review article reviewed recent advances in research and study of H. erinaceus and discussed the potential health-promoting activities of this fungus, with recognition of the bioactive compounds responsible for these medicinal properties."

"Therapeutic Potential of Hericium erinaceus for Depressive Disorder"

"Hericium erinaceus has been shown to have various health benefits, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antihyperglycemic and lipid-lowering effects. It has been used to treat cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Bioactive compounds extracted from the mycelium and fruit bodies of H. erinaceus have been found to promote the expression of neurotrophic factors associated with cell proliferation such as nerve growth factors. Although the antidepressant effects of H. erinaceus have not been validated and compared with conventional antidepressants, based on the neurotrophic and neurogenic pathophysiology of depression, H. erinaceus may be a potential alternative medicine for the treatment of depression. This article critically reviews the current literature on the potential benefits of H.Erinaceus as a treatment for depressive disorder, as well as its mechanisms underlying antidepressant activities."

"Anti-Aging and Neuroprotective Properties of Grifola frondosa and Hericium erinaceus Extracts"

"Nutrition has relevant consequences for human health and increasing pieces of evidence indicate that medicinal mushrooms have several beneficial effects. One of the main issues in Western countries is represented by the challenges of aging and age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders. Among these, Parkinson's disease (PD) affects 10 million people worldwide and is associated with α-synuclein misfolding, also found in other pathologies collectively called synucleinopathies. Here, we show that aqueous extracts of two edible mushrooms, Grifola frondosa and Hericium erinaceus, represent a valuable source of β-glucans and exert anti-aging effects in yeast. Their beneficial effects are mediated through the inhibition of the Ras/PKA pathway, with increased expression of heat shock proteins, along with a consistent increase of both mean and maximal lifespans. These fungal extracts also reduce the toxicity of α-synuclein heterologously expressed in yeast cells, resulting in reduced ROS levels, lower α-synuclein membrane localization, and protein aggregation. The neuroprotective activity of G. frondosa extract was also confirmed in a PD model of Drosophila melanogaster. Taken together, our data suggest the use of G. frondosa and H. erinaceus as functional food to prevent aging and age-related disorders, further supporting the neuro-healthy properties of these medicinal mushroom extracts."

"Extracts from Hericium erinaceus relieve inflammatory bowel disease by regulating immunity and gut microbiota"

"Hericium erinaceus (HE), a traditional edible mushroom, is known as a medicine food homology to ameliorate gastrointestinal diseases. To investigate whether HE is clinically effective in alleviating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), HE extracts (polysaccharide, alcoholic extracts and whole extracts were prepared using solvent extraction methods) were administrated for 2 weeks in rats with IBD induced by trinitro-benzene-sulfonic acid (TNBS) enema (150 mg/kg). Significant clinical and histological changes in IBD rats were identified, including damage activity, common morphous and tissue damage index scores in colonic mucosa and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. The damage activity, common morphous and tissue damage index scores in colonic mucosa (P <0.05) were improved, MPO activities were decreased. Inflammatory factors were also differentially expressed in colonic mucosa in IBD rats, including serum cytokines, Foxp3 and interleukin (IL)-10 were increased while NF-κB p65 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were decreased (P <0.05), and T cells were activated (P <0.05), especially in the alcohol extracts-treated group. We also found that the structure of gut microbiota of the H. erinaceus extracts-treated groups changed significantly by compared with the model group. Further studies revealed that the polysaccharides in HE extracts may play a prebiotic role, whereas the alcoholic extracts show bactericidin-like and immunomodulatory effects. Taken together, we demonstrated that H. erinaceus extracts could promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and improve the host immunity in vivo IBD model, which shows clinical potential in relieving IBD by regulating gut microbiota and immune system"

"From the Fungus "Hericium Erinaceus" a path towards the recovery of cognitive decline during Aging"

"A scientific work has been published in the prestigious international journal "Nutrients" by a team of researchers from the University of Pavia. The team consists of two research laboratories from the Department of Biology and Biotechnology." Aging occurs as the sum of all the changes, physiological, genetic and molecular that involve the body during growth, development and senescence. Locomotor frailty is a sub-clinical syndrome that is accompanied by an increased risk of adverse events such as falls, fractures, loss of autonomy and disability Thanks to immunohistochemical studies on the hippocampus and cerebellum, the molecular mechanism involved in this effect has been studied.
